Grill This, Buster!

Yesterday, Peeved Michelle was considering starting a blog about Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. After some deliberation, she decided to start a blog about stuff she would buy if she were rich instead. This got me to thinking. I really, really like grilled cheese sandwiches, and pride myself on my ability to make a really kick-ass good grilled cheese sandwich. I also enjoy finding out what restaurants make grilled cheese sandwiches worth digesting. The two most excellent places in Toronto to get a grilled cheese sandwich:

Fran’s Diner. Except that they closed down all their locations, with the exception of the franchised location on College Street which is a mediocre replica at best. So no more grilled cheese from Fran’s. Try their vegetarian chili, though. And the double chocolate brownie binge.

Indigo Café at Indigo Bookstores. Awesome. Grilled. Cheese. Two large slices of wavy-cut sourdough bread with stringy-melty cheese oozing out the sides. Really grilled, not fried, and the height of perfection of grilled cheese sandwiches. Even better than mine. Except that Indigo recently purchased Chapters bookstore, and with it acquired a standing contract with Starbucks to provide café services. So the Indigo Cafes are all gone, replaced with Seattle’s Worst Coffee. And Starbucks doesn’t sell grilled cheese. And if they did, it would probably cost $17.53, not the lovely $3.99 that Indigo Café charged (and theirs came with chips/salsa or mixed greens!).

You seriously just told us about the two best places to get a grilled cheese in Toronto, only to inform us that you can no longer get grilled cheese sandwiches at either location. That is just hellish.

There's an understatement. Now there's nowhere to get a decent grilled cheese sandwich. In Toronto, anyway.
